Celebrating our 69th Commencement Exercises!

May 26, 2017

On Thursday, May 25, Matignon held its 69th annual commencement for the Class of 2017.  Nearly 100 students received their diplomas in front of a packed auditorium. They were led by co-valedictorians Gianna DeAngelis and Junhan Zeng and salutatorian Colleen Driscoll. Each of them gave heartfelt and memorable addresses, discussing personal challenges, triumphs, and the opportunities that awaited them as newly minted graduates of Matignon High School.

In a stirring speech that reflected upon her recent health concerns, Gianna remarked how compassion - not money, power, or prestige - should be the way in which we define success in life.  “Compassion is truly the most important virtue we have in the world today,” she said. “I challenge you to use your compassion to give others hope and determination.”

Junhan faced a different set of challenges at Matignon as an international student from China, and she reflected on the personal growth she has experienced here. “Matignon is a surprise in my life,” she noted, while discussing the faculty and staff who taught and advised her throughout her 4 years. “I was and am continually surprised by Matignon’s ability to develop students’ potential, and to motivate students to be their best selves.”

Also receiving diplomas that evening were the Golden Jubilarians, members of the Class of 1967 who celebrated their 50th anniversary of graduating from Matignon. Included in that esteemed group is Ms. Rebecca Boylan, a member of the Matignon Board of Trustees, who gave the evening’s keynote address to the graduates: “What binds us together is the vision of this school for the future, and the fact that we all realize we would not be who we are today if we had not gone to school here…. Don’t ever take this school, your religious life, your family, or anything that you hold dear, for granted.”

At Matignon, we are incredibly proud and inspired by the members of the Class of 2017, with 99% of those students attending 4-year colleges in the fall.  Many are headed to acclaimed schools, such as Boston College, College of the Holy Cross, Cornell University, Penn State University, New York University, Northeastern University, and more.  Congratulations to the Class of 2017!
