Students Receive Scholarships Through ACE Mentorship Program
May 11, 2018
We are extremely proud of two members of the Class of 2018 who participated in the ACE Mentorship program this year. ACE is a program run by professionals in the design and construction fields working together to inspire high school students to pursue careers in these industries.
Students work on actual project designs and present their completed projects at the end of the program. In addition to being a tremendous hands-on learning opportunity, ACE awards over $125,000 every year to participants for college!
This year, Isabella Fontana was awarded $8,000 and Leanne Medeiros was awarded $10,000. Congratulations ladies and best of luck as you move on in your academic careers.
From Isabella Fontana:
"I joined the ACE (Architecture, Construction, and Engineering) Mentorship Program in my sophomore year at Matignon. I had recently co-created the RED Team with Mrs. Ridley, and Mr. Welsh had heard about a free STEM program in Cambridge and decided to bring one of their leaders to Matignon to talk to students in RED about this brilliant partnership. As part of the program, students work on design and engineering projects. The two projects I worked on were a concept Train Station in Hyde Park and an Affordable Housing complex near South Station. There were multiple sub-groups such as Architecture, Site Management, and Structural Engineering. Since I had decided a long time ago that I want to be a Mechanical Engineer, I chose to be in the MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Engineering) group. At the end of each year, all of the students and mentors from the program met at the Wentworth Institute of Technology to give presentations. It was really cool to be able to see the ways in which different groups were tackling the same concepts and the creative ways everyone managed to get around different obstacles. At the end of it all, seniors were given the opportunity to be awarded a scholarship and I was fortunate enough to receive $8,000 towards my college education. Overall, the ACE Mentorship Program was a very fun, interesting, and worthwhile experience and I highly recommend it to any future Matignon student."
From Leanne Mederios:
"Being part of the Matignon RED team, I was exposed to this program through a presentation by two mentors from the program brought to us by Mr. Welsh. The ACE Mentor program met once a week and we spent our time working together as a group to work on the engineering, design, and architecture aspects of a given project. After spending 6 months working on the building, all of the different locations met and presented the different ways we all approached the same project. The scholarship given at the end of my two years at ACE was definitely not the only valuable element that I left with. I learned about different aspects of the construction field, how to communicate and compromise between disciplines, and how to confidently present my ideas."
