Gala 2015

On Thursday, May 7, 2015 Matignon High School hosted it's first ever fundraising gala, the Tradition of Excellence. THANK YOU to everyone who made the night a resounding success! We are especially grateful to His Eminence, Cardinal O'Malley, O.F.M. Cap., for joining us for the evening, and to Candy O'Terry who served as our emcee. The night can easily be summed up from the words of one of our student speakers:

"When asked, I proudly tell people I am a member of the Matignon High School Family!" -- Mary Cara Listro '17

We are so grateful for a wonderful evening of celebration, support, and blessings for our great school. Thanks to the generosity of so many, we raised more than $220,000 for financial aid - an incredible feat and a wonderful gift for our students. In addition, we shared stories and memories of Matignon, and were able to honor two great stewards of our school with these inaugural awards:

Cardinal Cushing
CommunityService Award

The Sloane Family &
Century Bank

Green & Gold
Legacy Award

Coach Marty Pierce
Boys' Hockey Coach 1964-2004

Cardinal Cushing, on Matignon's founding day in 1948, laid out a vision for the school, that it would:

"...ever send forth from its door, graduates, both young men and women, so filled with ideals of service that no cry of human need, no syllable of striving will ever fall unheeded on their ears."

It is because of the Sloane Family, Coach Pierce, everyone that joined us for the event, and so many more, that we are able to heed the call of Cardinal Cushing. So thank you again. In addition to our wonderful honorees we were also blessed to hear from our Headmaster, Timothy Welsh; Board President, Edward Holleran '65; His Eminence, Cardinal O'Malley; and the wonderful Candy O'Terry, all who spoke fondly about Matignon, whether they've been an alum of 50 years, or just had their first tour this year.

However, the show was truly stolen by our two student speakers, who showed us what it means to Expect Excellence.  Mary Cara Listro, a sophomore and rising star at Matignon, spoke on the importance of joining a legacy of Matignon graduates and staff members from her family. She sees Matignon not just as a wonderful education and workplace for those she calls family - but she sees Matignon as an extension of her family, a place she proudly called, "My Matignon Family."

"One of my favorite parts of Matignon High School is the family that has developed in the hallways. I believe that this is most evident in the halls after school, in the people who choose to stay and go to sports, or even to just do their homework in the library together. It is clear we want to support one another and that we are as important to each other here as we are to our families at home."

Juan Gallego '15, spoke eloquently about the impact Matignon had on his life and his decision to study Political Science at Bridgewater State University this fall:

"I strongly believe that I have been well prepared over the last 4 years for the upcoming challenges that I will be faced with in college, and ultimately in life. Because of Matignon High School, the faculty and the staff, the opportunities are endless."

Juan too spoke on the value of family at Matignon, pointing to his football coach who challenged Juan to be the best person he could be. Coach Nalen became an important mentor for Juan, teaching him what it means to truly Expect Excellence. As Juan says, "Coach Nalen is an example of what many, if not all, of our faculty and staff are for our students. How they make this a truly inspiring experience."

Thank you again to all who made the night a memorable experience, and everyone else who keeps us in their thoughts and prayers.
